Hanukkah Macaroni Necklace

Menorah with Toys, Candy, and Gifts in Background

Your preschooler can celebrate Hanukkah by creating this Menorah replica necklace. With eight "candles" and "eternal flame", this Menorah necklace represents the symbol of the story of the eight-day miracle. When the Biblical Jews ran out of oil to light the Menorah in the Holy Temple, a miracle occured! There was enough oil to light the Temple's eternal flame for only a day, but it lasted eight days until more oil was found. While celebrating this miracle is important for Jewish people, all preschoolers can create this Menorah necklace to learn about other cultures.

Materials You Will NeedDifficulty Level 2 out of 5

9 pieces of straight macaroni
9 pieces of 14" yellow yarn
Red magic marker
School glue

How to Make It

Step 1:

Match up the ends of the yarn together and tie in a knot.

Step 2:

String one piece of macaroni onto each strand of yarn, pulling them all the way down. Tie a double knot at the top of the pieces of macaroni, creating the "flames".

Step 3:

Cut the yarn directly above the knots of the middle seven candles only, leaving the two end pieces to tie around your preschooler's neck.

Step 4:

With the red magic marker, color the tips of the "flames".

Step 5:

Line the candles up flat and drop a bit of glue between each piece of macaroni. Allow to dry for several hours.

Step 6:

Tie the loose ends of yarn together around your preschooler's neck. Enjoy wearing this miniature Menorah!
