Giant Peppermint Candy Ornament

Nothing adds flavor to the holidays like peppermint candy. Although you can't eat this polymer clay "peppermint candy" ornament, you and your preschooler will enjoy making it and hanging it on your holiday or Christmas tree.

Materials You Will NeedDifficulty Level 4 out of 5

Red polymer clay 4 oz.
White polymer clay 4 oz.
Plastic knife
Waxed paper
2 twist ties
Clear cellophane wrap
Toothpick
Red ribbon

How to Make It

Note: Before working with polymer clay, condition it by working it with your hands before molding. This prevents cracking and makes the clay more pliable.

Step 1:

Roll the red polymer clay into a ball. Place it between two sheets of waxed paper and roll flat to create a 5" circle. Do the same thing with the white clay.

Step 2:

Place the red clay circle onto a baking sheet. Using the plastic knife, cut the circle into eight even slices, just like a pizza.

Step 3:

Cut the white clay circle into eight even slices.

Step 4:

Remove every other piece from the red clay, leaving four pieces intact. Replace with four of the white clay slices. Press together so that there are no visible seams. This should now resemble a giant peppermint candy.

Step 5:

With the toothpick, make a 1/8" hole at the top of the "candy" ornament.

Step 6:

Bake at low temperatures according to manufacturer's instructions for about 30 minutes.

Step 7:

After the ornament is completely cooled, wrap the "candy" in the cellophane wrapper, using the twist ties to secure the ends.

Step 8:

Poke a hole in the cellophane in order to thread the red ribbon through the hole. Loop the ribbon through the hole to hang on the tree.
