By Joanna Young

Preschoolers love playing with empty wrapping paper rolls. Why not recycle them with a great preschool Christmas (and New Year’s) craft ideas? You and your preschooler can easily turn your empty wrapping paper rolls into…

Giant Candy Cane Craft

Children Laugh as They Lay in Wrapping Paper from Christmas Presents Dip a long string of thick red yarn in a mixture of half glue, half water. Twist the wet yarn around and around the empty wrapping paper roll until it reaches from top to bottom. Allow to dry. Set the giant candy cane by the Christmas tree for a whimsical touch.

Stocking Holder Craft

Using poster paint (red or green), paint the empty wrapping paper roll. Allow to dry. Attach a loop of festive ribbon to hang the roll on the wall. Hang your Christmas stockings to the roll by looping strings of ribbon around the wrapping paper roll and hanging the stockings with ornament hangers.

Christmas Card Hanger Craft

Follow the instructions for the above Stocking Holder Craft, but instead of looping ribbon to hang stockings, tape three long strands of ribbon to the bottom of the roll. Staple your Christmas cards to the dangling ribbons.

New Year’s Noise Maker Baton Craft

Paint the empty wrapping paper roll with bright colors. Allow to dry and fill with a couple of handfuls of dried beans. With a rubber band, secure a piece of waxed paper to both ends of the wrapping paper. On New Year’s Eve, your preschooler can twirl and shake the noise maker baton!

More Uses for Recycling Wrapping Paper Rolls

Store Christmas lights. When you take your Christmas tree down, make storage easier by winding your strand of Christmas lights around the empty wrapping paper roll. Secure by taping the end of the strand.

Store your Christmas tree skirt, wrinkle free. Wrap your Christmas tree skirt around the empty wrapping paper roll, secure with scotch tape and store it safely without worry of wrinkles next year.
