Note: The food pyramid in this Preschool Halloween Craft article is based on an older version of the USDA food pyramid and is preferred for this costume based on its recognizable format. For more information and visual of the updated food pyramid, visit MyPyramid.gov.

Step 3:

Go through newspaper ads and magazines with your preschooler, cutting out photos of various types of foods. Look for pictures of a variety of foods:

Fats (butter, oil, candy bars, etc.)
Dairy (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.)
Meat (chicken, steak, hamburger, etc.)
Vegetables (broccoli, peas, green beans, etc.)
Fruits (apples, oranges, lemons, etc.)
Breads (bread, cereal, oatmeal, etc.)

Step 4:

Glue the food photos onto your pyramid.

Step 5:

Attach the piece of ribbon to the top of the food pyramid to hang around your preschooler’s neck.

Suggested Food Pyramid Costume Accessories

Sew or glue pieces of fake fruit to the sleeves of a long-sleeved shirt and/or baseball cap for an even more “fruitful” Halloween costume!

Additional Uses for Your Food Pyramid Craft

By all means, don’t throw away this food pyramid costume accessory after Halloween! Remove the ribbon and tack it to your preschooler’s wall for a nutritionally educational poster.
